LOHS Class of 1963

About Us:
Welcome to the website for the Lake Oswego Lakers Class of 1963.

Our graduating class numbered 251; of that number 34 are deceased.

We always prided ourselves on our school spirit-- winning everything from the Canned Food Drive to the Paper Drive. Our class felt close to each other, and we will be using this site to remain in touch. We plan to share infomation of interest and help to our classmates.

Student Body Officers were Larry Cable (President), Beryl Yandle (1st VP), Midge Carter (2nd VP), John Mangelsdorf (2nd VP), Kay Koenig (Secretary), Frank Lord (Treasurer), Linda Kurtz (Song leader), and Bill Brockhaus (Chaplain).

Class Officers were Van Swarthout (President), John Russell (1st VP), Ginny Campbell (2nd VP), Diane Dehner (Secretary), and Bruce Ward (Treasurer).

The doors of Lake Oswego High School first opened in 1951. Since then it has grown from a six-year school to a three-year and (in 1971) to a four-year school.

From its location and name, Lake Oswego High School adopted a nautical theme. The nickname is "Lakers." The colors during our era were purple and white (the colors are now navy and white).

The anchor is the school symbol and suggests steadfast purpose. The mascot is a raingear-garbed seaman called "Pilot Joe."

LakeViews newspaper editor was Barbara Bohlman. Laker's Log yearbook editors were Pat Turner and Janet Williams.

Here are a few tidbits from our 1963 Laker's Log:

  • As sophomores, we entered a school of 750 students and left as seniors from a school of 900 students.
  • Our sophomore class won the Best Class Award--- and would have won as juniors if all of our points for the Paper Drive hadn't been nullified;  we did set a new school record for the Canned Food Drive.
  • As seniors we bested the prior year's Canned Food record and set yet another all-time record allowing Queen Beryl Yandle to reign over the Christmas formal "Season of Splendor." We were well on our way to another Best Class award victory.
  • Exchange students were Luat ("Johnny") Trieu Nguyen from Vietnam and Katerina Koini from Greece.
  • As seniors we made it through Hurricane Freda (aka the "Columbus Day Storm") which lashed Oregon with 120 mph winds just before Homecoming, but Queen Ginny Campbell was able to reign over "Home is Where the Heart Is" festivities.
  • We survived the Cuban Missile Crisis and practiced evacuation in case of nuclear attack.
  • Plays included "Teahouse of the August Moon,"  "Bye Bye Birdie," and "A Palm Tree in a Rose Garden" plus a dinner dance "Showboat."
  • AFS exchange students from our class were Van Swarthout (Argentina), Midge Carter (Peru), and Karen May (Switzerland).
  • Female rally squad members were Nancy Betty, Marcia Brown, Sue Goddard, Marcia Patrick, Sandy Reece, & Barbie White. Rally guys were Geoff Bushell, Bob Coltman, & John Mangelsdorf.
  • Football season ended with 4 wins-5 losses.
  • The Laker men swimmers (even without a home pool) scored 6th in the state meet; Laker women had a 7-4 win-loss record.
  • With an 8-10 win-loss record, the basketball team placed 6th in the TYV League.
  • Wrestling team had a league record season with 5 wins and 4 losses. Classmates Bob Keith and Jim Loew wrestled the Japanese national high school champions.
  • Baseball team won the TYV championship.
  • Track team "cindermen" won all their dual meets. At the Hayward Relays in Eugene they placed 7th;sprinters took 1st in the 880 relay. Two school records were broken.
  • Men golfers captured first place in their league and went to state. Women had a 6-3 season.
  • Men's tennis team took second in the district. Women had a 3-3-1 year.
  • Organizations included: Student Senate, Omega Honor Society, French, German and Spanish Clubs, Girls' League, Fire Squad, Midshipmen, Dance Band, Choir, Orchestra, Pep Band, Quartermasters, Speech/Debate, International Relations League, American Field Service and a wide variety of school committees.
  • Dance events included Homecoming, Christmas formal, after-game dances, Turnabout, the Haystack Hop, May Fete, and the Junior-Senior Prom.
  • Queen Marcia Brown ruled over May Fete's "That Wonderful Year"; our class won the skit competition with "The Last Time I saw Paris."
  • We graduated on June 5, 1963.
